New story in Business from Time: The Pentagon Is Awaiting a Possible Challenge from Amazon over a $10 Billion Cloud Deal

Image
Amazon must decide soon if it will protest the Pentagon’s awarding of a $10 billion cloud computing contract to rival Microsoft, with one possible grievance being the unusual attention given the project by President Donald Trump. Amazon was long thought to be the front-runner in the competition for the huge military contract. Its Amazon Web Services division is far ahead of second-place Microsoft as the market leader for cloud computing and has experience handling highly classified government data. It survived earlier legal challenges after the Defense Department eliminated rival bidders Oracle and IBM and whittled the competition down to the two Seattle area tech giants before choosing Microsoft last week. And what else distinguishes the losing bidder? Amazon and its CEO Jeff Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, have been frequent targets of Trump’s criticism. The Pentagon was preparing to make its final decision when Trump publicly waded into the fray in July, sa...

New story in Business from Time: WeWork’s Ex-CEO Faces Pregnancy Discrimination Complaint (NEW YORK) — A former top aide to WeWork co-founder Adam Neumann is accusing him and other executives of discriminating against her for becoming pregnant. Medina Bardhi says in a federal complaint filed Thursday that she was demoted, derided for going on leave, and ultimately fired for raising concerns. Bardhi, who was Neumann’s chief of staff until she was fired in October, is seeking class action status against New York-based WeWork, claiming a pattern of discrimination against women at the office-sharing company. The complaint, filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, describes a culture at WeWork in which women were paid less than men, demeaned for getting pregnant and subjected to sexually offensive conduct at alcohol-fueled company events. “Our hope is that this class action complaint will send a loud and clear message to WeWork and other startups that pregnan...

Earlier this month the company recalled 33,000 bottles of its talc powder after Food and Drug Administration testing revealed trace amounts of the dangerous substance in a single bottle. But Johnson & Johnson said in a statement that dozens of tests by two outside firms did not detect any asbestos in the company’s product. It said the tests covered the bottle previously tested by the FDA and other samples from the same lot that was recalled. The FDA said, however, that it stands...

Earlier this month the company recalled 33,000 bottles of its talc powder after Food and Drug Administration testing revealed trace amounts of the dangerous substance in a single bottle. It said the tests covered the bottle previously tested by the FDA and other samples from the same lot that was recalled. The FDA said, however, that it stands by its testing that found traces of asbestos. It noted that given the minuscule size of samples taken from a si...

New story in Business from Time: Southwest Pilots Streamed Video From a Bathroom Cam, a Lawsuit Alleges New story in Business from Time: Southwest Pilots Streamed Video From a Bathroom Cam, a Lawsuit Alleges PHOENIX (AP) — A lawsuit filed against Southwest Airlines by a flight attendant alleges pilots on a 2017 flight had an iPad streaming video from a hidden camera in a bathroom in one of the airline’s jets. Southwest responded Saturday by denying it places cameras in aircraft lavatories and by calling the 2017 incident an “inappropriate attempt at humor” not condoned by the company. The lawsuit alleges flight attendant Renee Steinaker saw an iPad streaming video from the plane’s forward bathroom when she entered the cockpit to be the required second person in the cockpit when the pilot left to use the bathroom about 2½ hours into a Feb. 27, 2017, flight to Phoenix from Pittsburgh. According to the suit, Steinaker saw the pilot in the streaming video on the iPad and ...
